Job overview

This 6 month fixed term consultant post is to support the ENT team with both surgical and clinical work following the surge of clinical activity and capacity reduction from COVID-19. Work will be based at both the Royal Stoke and County Hospitals. The team requires support from an enthusiastic ENT general surgeon who can manage all aspects of ENT and Head and Neck Surgery.

Specific surgical skills relating to paediatric ENT surgery, rhinology and otology are required to assist with the surgical caseload. Medical education qualifications and experience are also highly desirable for this role.

Main duties of the job

The appointed applicant will have an integral role in assisting in waiting list backlogs, with routine new referrals, follow up appointments and general ENT operating lists. It is likely that the majority of the clinical sessions will be based at County Hospital. Successful applicants would be expected to take part in the on-call rota for the department based on a 1:9 weekday frequency and 1:14 weekend frequency as this is shared with East Cheshire NHS Trust

The department prides itself on a cohesive and congenial working relationship between 9 consultants, who collectively provide a comprehensive portfolio of general and specialist ENT services, including anterior/lateral skull base surgery, tertiary rhinology/otology, paediatric airway surgery, tertiary head and neck and craniofacial/reconstructive surgery. The applicant will be expected to have paediatric airway experience to cover the tertiary paediatric service of the recently opened ‘Staffordshire Children’s Hospital’.

Working for our organisation

Royal Stoke University Hospital was rebuilt in 2012 as part of a £400m initiative to bring all hospital services in Stoke-on-Trent onto one large campus site. Royal Stoke is a great place to work, learn and research. The hospital campus holds 80% of the Trust’s services, including the Major Trauma Centre and Emergency Centre. Royal Stoke receives major trauma patients from as far afield as Anglesey in North Wales and in total serves more than three million people. The A&E sees close to 150,000 people a year, making it one of the busiest departments in the country.

Many of UHNMs 450 consultants are based at Royal Stoke, and the main specialist services for the region are located here. These services include the major specialties of Cardiovascular, Neurosciences, Metabolic/GI, Women’s & Children’s, Musclo-Skeletal Services/Trauma and Oncology. To deliver all these services and the many others we provide the Trust has created major departments to deliver the patient care.
