Job overview

The University Hospital of North Midlands, Mid Cheshire and East Cheshire NHS Trusts are working collaboratively to form a Pathology network (NMCPS) in line with a NHSI directive.

Internal to staff employed by North Midlands and Cheshire Pathology Service (NMCPS) only.

Medical Laboratory Assistant 

Location:  Royal Stoke Site.

We are seeking applications from motivated, enthusiastic individuals to work as part of the Biochemistry team.

The hours of work are 5 days per week of 7.5 hours between 8am and 8pm  with 60 minute lunch.  If a Saturday or Sunday is worked there will be a rest day the following week.

The successful candidate will be based at Royal Stoke and will also work at the County site when required.

 The post involves:-

  • Receipt and identification of biological samples from Hospital and GP patients.
  • Barcode labelling and data entry of confidential information for Blood Sciences onto the Pathology computer system (Masterlab).
  • Phoning results for Biochemistry and dealing with incoming calls to the department.
  • Use of centrifuges to separate blood samples.
  • Distribution of samples to all pathology departments.
  • Basic laboratory analysis and support for the department including maintenance of analysers currently ADVIA 1800, Centaur XPi and Quantalyser 2 IFA / ELISA platform.
  • A good general education to GCSE level or equivalent is required and experience in data entry is essential.
  • Previous experience of laboratory work is preferable but not essential as in house training will be given to enable the successful applicant to meet the requirements of the job.

The proficient use of the Pathology Computer system is required, full training will be given.

Knowledge Training & Education

Essential criteria
  • Good standard of Education demonstrated by GCSE grades A-C in Maths, English and a Science subject.
  • Relevant NVQ level 2 or equivalent. A suitable Apprenticeship such as Clinical Laboratory Support. The IBMS Certificate of Achievement.
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ level 3 in Clinical Laboratory Support

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of Data Entry
  • Previous experience of working in a Laboratory environment.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of basic laboratory analysis and support for the department including maintenance of analysers currently ADVIA 1800, Centaur XPi and Quantalyser 2 IFA / ELISA platform.
