B4/5 development post dependent on experience 

The post holder will join our existing Clinical Technology team and would primarily be working in our mechanical workshop, responsible for the design, manufacture and repair of mechanical components such as surgical tools and research projects. This would include machining, fabrication and the use of AutoCad. Participate in the use, care, repair, calibration and maintenance of medical devices and support of technology in a hospital environment. The successful applicant must be qualified to a minimum of HNC level, or equivalent in a relevant engineering subject 


Main duties of the job

The department of Clinical Technology provides a comprehensive medical equipment management and maintenance service to the University Hospital of North Midlands (UHNM) and external healthcare bodies. Based at both the Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital sites, the department consists of multidisciplinary teams of medical engineers, including renal, general medical, imaging, critical care and medical gasses, which provide medical equipment maintenance and support to services across the organisation and to other local healthcare providers.

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved with a rapidly expanding service delivering essential technical support to clinical teams while ensuring best value from the significant investment in medical equipment taking place within UHNM.

Person specification


Essential criteria
  • Degree, HNC or equivalent in an appropriate engineering subject
  • Hold a current, valid (non- provisional) UK driving licence
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of an appropriate professional body
  • On the Clinical Technologist Voluntary register


Essential criteria
  • Be able to produce evidence of CPD in a mechanical engineering environment
  • Experience of working within the NHS in a medical / Mechanical technology service environment.
  • Experience of working from drawings and specifications without supervision
Desirable criteria
  • Experience & theoretical knowledge in the maintenance of medical devices.

Skills, ability and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft products, able to enter data into equipment management database.
  • Highly skilled in the use of mechanical workshop equipment independently
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of CAD systems
  • Knowledge of Human Physiology
