Specialist Biomedical scientist

Permanent Full time position (37.5 hours)

Location: University Hospital of North Midlands Royal Stoke and County Hospital sites.

We are one of the largest Blood Science departments in the UK employing over 200 staff supporting a wide range of medical specialities for adults and children. The department has undertaken major expansion in the last 5 years and this is expected to continue.

The Blood Sciences department is based on 2 sites - the main laboratory is at the Royal Stoke Hospital with an essential services laboratory situated in County Hospital - Stafford site. The successful candidate will be expected to work at either site as required for service delivery.

We are seeking suitably experienced, enthusiastic and self-motivated HCPC registered Specialist Biomedical Scientists to join our friendly and dedicated Blood Sciences team. The vacancy is within the Biochemistry Department. Applicants must hold an IBMS Specialist Diploma in a relevant discipline (or equivalent). Substantial post registration experience in a Blood Sciences laboratory is essential. Consideration will be given to HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists with suitable experience for appointment at Band 5; you will receive support in developing higher specialist skills. The Biochemistry laboratory is UKAS accredited and processes in excess of 900,000 samples per year. It is well equipped, providing a wide range of routine and specialist diagnostic services with Advia 2400 routine biochemistry analysers, Centaur XP’s, Immulite XPi, SEBIA electrophoresis, BN11 Nephelometer, Tosoh G8 HPLC and a Waters Mass Spectrometer. The successful applicant will work on a rotational basis in the automated and manual sections of the department. The department has IBMS accreditation as a training laboratory and actively supports personal development and participation in CPD.

The core laboratory offers a core 24/7 continuous process pattern service and after appropriate training and familiarisation, the successful candidate would be expected to participate in the full departmental shift rota including call out. Payment is under AfC terms and conditions which also attracts a temporary shift enhancement.

North Staffordshire is an area of contrasting scenes at the heart of Britain and covers approximately 340 square miles. It is bordered to the west by Shropshire and the North East by the Derbyshire Peak District and is separated from the Black Country to the south by some 30 miles of agricultural land, in the middle of which lies the county town of Stafford. The Trust boundaries correspond to those of the local government districts of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Moorlands. Housing is plentiful, varied and cheap, with excellent shopping and cultural facilities. There are also fast road and rail links. Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme are adjacent to the M6 (Junction 15) motorway, about one hour’s drive from both Manchester and Birmingham. There is an Inter-City rail service, with London less than two hours away, and three international airports within a 50 mile radius.
