Job overview

UHNM are looking for a Consultant in Breast Imaging involved in both the screening and symptomatic service. 

Main duties of the job

At UHNM the cross sectional radiologists work closely with their colleagues in Surgery, Histopathology and Oncology through cancer MDT’s and joint clinico-radiological conferences. Breast MDTs are established, with cover in rotation between all the radiologists. The MDTs are a full sessional commitment with approximately 110 cases discussed at the main meeting and 30 cases discussed at the additional one.


Working for our organisation

The University Hospital is the main teaching hospital for the Keele University Undergraduate Medical School and there are close ties with the University of Keele and Staffordshire University.

The Breast radiology services are based on a strong ethos of Quality Assurance, Audit, Evidence and Research. The Radiologists are currently recruiters for 10 national and international multicentre studies, with grants for 2 local trials in progress. Areas of recent service improvement include both ultrasound and stereo Magseed localisation, expansion of the VAB service, establishment of high risk breast cancer screening and the addition of Tomosynthesis. We are currently in the process of introducing Contrast Enhanced Spectral Mammography and are in the early stages of setting up a breast MRI biopsy service.

We are the number one ranked trauma unit in the country and a Consultant job here will provide great exposure to acute body radiology imaging.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will be working with 5 Breast Radiologists who provide a first class service. The Breast department supports 5 Surgeons and also supports the National Breast Screening Programme for a population of 650,000 ladies screening 126,000 ladies per annum. The Radiologists work alongside a Consultant Radiographer, 3.0 wte Clinical Specialists, 6.0 wte Advanced Practitioners and 14 wte Radiographers in Breast. Consultants are actively involved in training registrars and advanced practitioners and we would expect the candidate to contribute to this.

  • Full registration with the GMC
  • FRCR or equivalent
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via one of the following: 1. Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview) 2. Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) 3. European Community Rights
