Job overview

The Post holder will be responsible for the assessment of the needs, development of programmes of care, and for the implementation and evaluation of these programmes for patients and their relatives. To provide a high standard of clinical nursing within the ward / department. To manage a group of patients. To take charge of the ward when rostered and assessed as competent to take on the roles and responsibilities of leadership and supervision. To act as a role model to students and 
Clinical Support Workers. To present a positive, professional image of the organisation and of the nursing team.

Working for our organisation

The University Hospital of North Staffordshire (UHNS) is located on the boarder of Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme.  It is one of the largest acute, general hospitals in the West Midlands and currently operates over 3 sites, the Royal Infirmary, Central Outpatients and the City General site.  The Trust has good transport links from the M6 motorway and is approximately 50 miles north of Birmingham and 45 miles south of Manchester.  

UHNS became an NHS Trust in 1993 and was awarded teaching status in 2003.  As a small but growing Teaching Hospital, and the Trust is continuing to develop a portfolio of research, development and innovation to improve services. In 2007 a new jointly managed clinical research facility opened providing state-of-the-art facilities for patient-centred research, and the opportunity to test ground-breaking new treatments.  A five year plan for research, development and innovation is being developed during 2008.

UHNS is the main provider of acute, general hospital services to a population of approximately half-a-million people living in and around North Staffordshire.  The Trust is one of four major tertiary centres in the West Midlands providing a range of specialist services to a wider population of around three million.

The Trust has a turnover in excess of £300m per year and operates with approximately 1250 beds and a workforce of 5978 whole time equivalents (at December 2007).
