An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic LAS Doctor (ST3+ level) in General Surgery, based at the Royal Stoke University Hospital, within one of the fastest growing teaching Trusts in the UK.

University Hospitals of North Midlands has two sites: Royal Stoke University Hospital, located in Stoke-on-Trent, and County Hospital, located in Stafford. From these hospitals we provide a full range of general acute hospital services for people living in and around Staffordshire and beyond. The Trust also provides specialised services for three million people in a wider area, including neighbouring counties and North Wales.

Our specialised services include cancer diagnosis and treatment, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, renal and dialysis services, neonatal intensive care and paediatric intensive care. We are recognised for our particular expertise in trauma, respiratory conditions, spinal surgery, upper gastro-intestinal surgery, complex orthopaedic surgery, laparoscopic surgery and the management of liver conditions. The Trust has some of the most modern operating theatres in Europe.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities will include attending outpatient clinics, inpatient and day case theatre sessions, doing ward rounds as well as participating in specialist activities. Theatre activity would include both assisting in surgery as well as undertaking procedures under supervision or independently as appropriate. At the present time routine activity is timetabled between 8am and 7pm Monday to Friday. The job undertaken will be the same as for a Specialist Registrar training post in the unit for both elective and emergency work.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCS Part two
  • Full GMC registration
Desirable criteria
  • Awards/distinctions whilst studying for 1st degree

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • A minimum of 2 years at SHO level in a substantive post in general surgery within the UK or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • Training at SPR level or equivalent experience in a sub-specialty of general surgery
